What is Integrative Nutrition?
As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, I’m often asked, “What exactly is integrative nutrition? What’s being integrated?” I’d like to share some insights to clarify this holistic approach to health.
The beauty of integrative nutrition lies in its comprehensive perspective, offering a genuine reflection of life’s complexities and how they affect our well-being. This approach resonated deeply with me, prompting my decision to delve into its study. Integrative nutrition is built on a fundamental principle: our health is influenced not only by what’s on our plate but also by what lies beyond it.
This broader concept of health aligns with the World Health Organization’s definition of health, which states: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

What’s On Our Plate vs. What’s Beyond the Plate
What’s On Your Plate?
When we talk about health, the immediate focus tends to be on food – what to eat, which supplements to take. These are crucial considerations, and focusing on what’s on our plate is tangible and familiar. But there’s more to the story.
What’s Beyond the Plate?
Integrative nutrition expands this focus, emphasizing that factors beyond the plate are just as critical. These include spirituality, relationships, career, social life, home environment, education, physical activity, home cooking, creativity, health, and finances. Each of these areas has a profound impact on our overall health.
Can Food Alone Determine Health?
It’s a common understanding among well-being experts that even the cleanest, most nutrient-rich diet cannot counteract the adverse effects of constant stress and unhappiness. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) teaches us that emotions are closely connected to specific organs, with imbalances leading to physical or mental health issues. For example, anger is said to harm the liver, while fear directly impacts the kidneys.
Addressing these intangible aspects of well-being can be challenging, but their influence on our health is undeniable. For instance, being in a toxic relationship can lead to poor mental health, lack of sleep, and even unhealthy coping mechanisms like alcohol abuse. On the other hand, a fulfilling career or creative outlet can bring joy and purpose, significantly enhancing your quality of life.
How Does Integrative Nutrition Help?
In the integrative nutrition health coaching program, we take a holistic approach, considering both on-the-plate and off-the-plate factors to promote health. This comprehensive approach is rooted in the belief that every person is a bio-individual, with unique anatomy, genetics, and metabolism.
Together, we’ll explore where you are now, where you want to be, and how to bridge that gap. It’s a simple but transformative way to reflect on your life and make intentional changes that lead to a healthier, more vibrant version of yourself.
